I know that we’re kicking off fall and the weather is starting to get chilly, but I’m a firm believer that smoothies should be enjoyed year-round. They’re an excellent way to add nutritious fruits, veggies and protein into your diet.
Plus, when you can make a smoothie taste exactly like pumpkin pie, is there really anything more you can ask for?
I first posted this pumpkin smoothie recipe on Instagram a few years back and you all went Tom Cruise crazy (TCC as I like to call it) for it. I immediately knew the recipe had to make a permanent appearance on the blog, and now is the perfect time to re-share it.
One of the reasons I love this recipe so much is because it’s the perfect way to use up leftover pumpkin puree after you’ve baked these healthy pumpkin cookies or this chocolate pumpkin bread that tastes like cake. Hehe.

Healthy pumpkin smoothie ingredients
This pumpkin smoothie is creamy, has the perfect consistency, is wonderfully spiced so it actually tastes like you’re enjoying a slice of pumpkin pie. Plus, it’s healthy! Here are the ingredients you’ll need:
- Pumpkin puree: if you’d like you can make your own using this tutorial or you can grab a can of pumpkin puree from the store.
- Plain or vanilla greek yogurt: I prefer whole milk for a boost of healthy fat, but feel free to use a dairy free yogurt if you’d like.
- Frozen banana: this helps to sweeten the smoothie and create a creamy consistency
- Almond milk: feel free to use regular milk or coconut milk if you prefer.
- Nut butter: I prefer almond butter or pecan butter for a hint of nutty sweetness + healthy fats to keep you satisfied.
- Vanilla extract: the one and only flavor booster.
- Pumpkin pie spices: we’re using cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and allspice (or you can sub pumpkin pie spice!)

Adding more nutrition to this pumpkin smoothie
Not only is this pumpkin smoothie super creamy, but there’s over 17g protein and 8g fiber per serving, making it a fabulous post-workout smoothie or afternoon snack to keep you fueled up. There are also several easy ways to boost the nutrition of this smoothie by adding any of the following ingredients:
- Flaxseed meal: this is one of my favorite ingredients to add to smoothies for a little boost of fiber and minerals, and is especially great for nursing mamas as flaxseed can help increase milk supply. Usually a tablespoon is plenty! Here’s a brand I love.
- Chia seeds: feel free to add in a tablespoon of chia seeds to your smoothie for a boost of healthy fats and fiber.
- Hemp seeds: if you’ve been wondering what to do with those hemp seeds lurking in your cupboard, feel free to throw in a tablespoon into your smoothie for a boost of healthy fats, omegas and minerals.
- Extra protein: add additional protein by using 1 scoop of your favorite protein powder. I recommend Vital Protein collagen peptides or Bob’s Red Mill Plant Based Vanilla Protein Powder.

Tips for making this healthy pumpkin smoothie recipe
Here are a few of my favorite tips for making this pumpkin pie smoothie creamy and delicious:
- Using a frozen banana as it helps keep the smoothie cold and thick. Sometimes ice doesn’t blend as well, so it’s best to skip unless absolutely necessary.
- Make sure to use a ripe, frozen banana for peak natural sweetness.
- Don’t be afraid to add more liquid if your smoothie is too thick or won’t fully blend. High powered blenders tend to blend frozen ingredients much better, so if you have a regular or personal size blender, you may need to add more milk.
- Start the blender on low speed, then gradually increase the speed to high to help blend all ingredients. End with the blender on low speed.

In Texas, it’s still hella hot when pumpkin season gets rolling in September. This VERY delicious smoothie will allow me to participate in Pumpkin Spice Fever without sweating to death or fudging my healthy eating goals. Thank you so much! I made it exactly as you recommended and will likely add chia seeds next time to get the protein count up to 20. Thanks!
Absolutely! Glad you love it!
Love this recepie and have made it countless times! I keep canned pumpkin on hand so I can be prepared. It’s easy, delicious and pretty healthy – the trifecta of smoothies!
Amazing! Glad to hear it’s a favorite 🙂
My kids loved this. Still turned out great despite not having any yogurt. I did add a scoop of whey protein powder. Will be making it again. Thank you.
So happy to hear that!
Quite tasty! I added a handful of red & green lettuce leaves and, two dates for extra sweetness. Thanks for the recipe!
Perfect! Glad you enjoyed!
I tried this exactly as written but without the optional date and it was very delicious. Next time I’ll try it with a bit more pumpkin and a little less cinnamon.
I opened a can of pumpkin puree and went ahead and measured out portions to freeze for future smoothies. I’m hoping that will help with the smoothie being a little more runny than I had hoped for. All in all, this recipe is a keeper!
Um… I just realized that the recipe I used was not this one! Oy…
So… I’ll report back my findings when I try it!
No worries! Let me know if you give this one a try!
Great shake. I used Sweet Potatoe purée because I didn’t have pumpkin purée and it tasted good.
Great idea! Glad you loved it!
I made your pumpkin banana smoothie w/o yogurt, doubled the almond milk, and added a scoop of protein/creatine powder for my 73 year old body. The creamy goodness is a delicious drink I love. I will definitely try it with yogurt when I make another batch of super gut recipe. Yum.
Perfect! So glad you enjoyed!
This was delicious. The only thing i was unsure of was the spices. I used pumpkin pie spice instead of the induvial spices so I wasn’t sure of the measurement. How much pumpkin pie spice should I use since it’s just one spice mixed together?
So glad you enjoyed! Feel free to just use 1/2 teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice 🙂 you can always add a little more and blend again if you want more pumpkin spice flavor!
I omitted the almond butter and vanilla as I didn’t have them. And I used regular milk as that is also all I had. I used the pumpkin pie spice. The banana wasn’t frozen so I added a few pieces of ice. Lastly I added some flax, chia and hemp seeds. I could drink this every day of my life!! Seriously one of the best drinks I have ever tasted!!!
Perfect! So glad you enjoyed!
I may like this more than actual pumpkin pie!!! I was out of yogurt this time so I did less milk and added collagen powder for protein. Still very good! I made it into a smoothie bowl and topped with banana, homemade granola, almond butter, cinnamon, and nutmeg!
Perfect!! Glad you enjoyed 🙂
I think I like this more than pumpkin pie! Sooo yummy.
Amazingly delicious! LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS!!! TY!!!!
One of our fav fall breakfasts, too!!
Amazing recipe! So creamy and tasty! Just made it for my high school daughter, and she immediately said, “this recipe is a keeper!” Just eyed the ingredients, and it came out great. Used plain 2% Greek yogurt and a little less banana, so probably a little less sweet if you like it that way,..or vanilla yogurt with the full banana would make it more so. Definitely must try if you like pumpkin!
Sounds AMAZING! I am so glad you’re loving this smoothie recipe and it turned out delicious for you 🧡
I just saved this to my Pinterest and commented as well. This was really good. I usually dislike Pinterest recipes but this one is definitely one of the good ones. I will be making this again. I will follow for more delicious recipes to try.
Yay! I am so glad you gave this recipe a try and are loving it, Elle!
It didn’t have a lot of flavor, honestly, and mine came out kind of runny. I would maybe freeze cubes of pumpkin puree, and step up the spice.
Hi Ash – Sorry to hear, what type of pumpkin puree did you use? Did you change anything about the recipe?
Thank you for sharing this with older recipe! It has quickly become one of my go to things to eat after weightlifting workouts! I like to add in oats, shredded coconut, honey, and sometimes some semi-sweet chocolate chips.
Of course! So glad this smoothie is a hit 🙂
This smoothie is a new favorite in my house. Super yummy and simple, as we typically have all of these ingredients on hand. Monique’s notes were on point about the frozen banana—I wasn’t sure if it would be cool enough but it was perfect and I didn’t have to add ice. It was a huge hit with my toddler, so much so that I only got about half! We’ll be keeping this one in the rotation. 🙂
SO glad to hear that you and the little one love it, Tori! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks! I was looking for what to do with extra pumpkin puree and this was perfect, healthy and delicious! I added s few berries too! Loved it!
The BEST! So glad you are loving this recipe 🙂
thank you for the information
Absolutely
OMG! This literally tasted like pumpkin pie in a cup. I used Culina’s Pumpkin Spice Plant Based Yogurt in place of the yogurt & pumpkin + added Four Sigmatic’s Sweet Vanilla Repair Plant-Based Protein. So good! Thank you. Xoxo.
AHH this is amazing! I’m SO glad you are enjoying this recipe 🙂
Delicious. I would not have thought to add a nut butter, but it was great. Quick, easy and great way to use some pumpkin from a can I opened yesterday. Thanks for the recipe.
Yay! Happy to hear it cam out great 🙂
Made it exactly per the recipe, I didn’t love it – I think the peanut butter is a miss, it tasted to ‘fresh’ to have that pumpkin pie flavour, I ended up adding some maple syrup and that helped quite a bit. It was ok, my 8 year old hated it, that said my toddler LOVED it, said it was her favourite, so maybe its just me, lol – will make again without peanut butter and with vanilla yogurt instead of greek – less healthy, but I think the flavor will be more what I was hoping for,
Sorry to hear that you didn’t like this one. Let me know what you think without the peanut butter.
Delicious! I also added 2 dates for some added sweetness. Thank you!
Oh my goodness I love this smoothies! To be honest I was a bit skeptical, but it has the perfect pumpkin pie taste without tasting like you’re just drinking blended pumpkin pie. I make the smoothie at night and then freeze it m, and then I defrost it in the morning, and it is just perfect. Thank you for the recipe!
So glad you ended up loving it! And that’s a great idea to freeze it 🙂
Can’t leave a positive for this one. If made as stated the frozen banana is not enough for a real smoothie texture…had to use ice. The greek yogurt is the overall taste so not feeling the pumpkin fall flavor, just the tang of the greek yogurt. I added more pumpkin and double the spice and still not enough spice if you are looking for a Jamba/Roxberry real pumpkin pie flavor. Meh. I’ll try another recipe tomorrow.
Hi, Mari! So sorry to hear you didn’t love this one. I haven’t had any issues with the texture, but I really appreciate the feedback!
Pumpkin pie in a glass – SO YUMMY.
It tasted like pumpkin pie filling in a glass, pretty good!
Happy you enjoyed it, Sania! Thanks for commenting 🙂
It’s ok, not what I was looking for. If you want a smoothie that tastes similar to the Jamba Juice pumpkin smoothie, this is not it. Banana was overpowering.
Sorry you didn’t love it, but thanks for the feedback! You could also try frozen cauliflower + dates or maple syrup in place of the banana 🙂
I just made this and it is so delicious! Nice change from my usual green smoothies. Thank you for the recipe!
Nice!! So glad you enjoyed it. You might like our free Smoothie Series, where you’ll get lots of recipes + my best tips 🙂
Really decilious and not too sweet. Thank you!
I’m so glad you loved it! Thanks, Jivan 🙂
I made this yesterday as I had canned pumpkin and yogurt I wanted to use up, Since I make my own yogurt, I added a teaspoon of vanilla. I also added a tablespoon of maple syrup. I was out of allspice and I didn’t feel like taking out my microplane to shave nutmeg so I made do with cinnamon and ginger. It came out delicious! Thanks for a tasty, filling nutritious smoothie. (I also make my own almond milk, Very easy and much cheaper)
Such a great way to use up leftover canned pumpkin, right?? So glad you loved it!
Freaking delicious!!! I love it and it will be my post workout and/or get home starving smoothie so I don’t eat 12 Ghirardelli’s again 🙈
Thank you!!!
Haha yes so perfect post-workout!! SO happy you loved it 🙂
“Crazy” is an ableist word. It perpetuates stereotypes and stigma.
This is my favorite smoothie! It is so delicious and creamy. I love pumpkin so I used a tad bit more to really taste the pumpkin. My bf loves it too!
I’m so glad you guys are loving it! Totally fine to add more pumpkin 🙂
Very flavorful and filling. Thanks for the great recipe!
So glad you enjoyed it, Candice!
This was delicious! I left out the milk and used a quarter cup of cottage cheese instead of yogurt, then I topped it with gingerbread granola to make a smoothie bowl. It was like pumpkin pie cheesecake… but BETTER!
Ooooh that sounds incredible!! happy to hear you loved it, Emily!
Delicious smoothie! Perfect for breakfast or a snack. I omitted the nut butter and it was still great. Definitely making again, great way to use leftover pumpkin when you open a can.
I liked it but I couldn’t taste the banana but it was still ok
Glad you enjoyed it! The banana flavor isn’t really strong in here so that the pumpkin can shine 🙂
Yummm! The smoothie I didn’t know I needed. Will be even better with a riper banana. Afterwards I realized I could’ve added a little maple syrup to sweeten it. I used Fairlife milk for a protein boost.
Happy you enjoyed it! And totally fine to add a little extra sweetness 🙂
